That's a wee bit long for a title
Hello
and welcome back to the blog, but more importantly: welcome back to school for another year!
Whether you're still in education or not, I think the change of season from summer to autumn signals a change in everyone. It's the last quarter of the year, and after the hedonism and indulgence that summer tends to bring (parties, travel, excess sun exposure, alcohol, food - all the good stuff) autumn is the time to start to slow down and more importantly start to reflect on how you actually want to live the last few months of the year.
I find summer far too stressful, especially as a postgrad where I didn't really get a summer as my uni work dragged out into July and was followed by my thesis proposal work. It's too hot and we work too hot despite the extreme temperatures. The idea of all the changes coming our way now is genuinely exciting. Change to cooler weather which will be a breathe of fresh air, some rain to clean the streets and the most exciting thing is possibly the change of wardrobe. I am sick to death of my summer clothes.
But more importantly than all of that, I'm using the change of season as a line of demarcation. My proposal was due, and was submitted, on the 27th of September. The beginning of autumn for me was, therefore, a cut off point. I now officially have 9 months to the end of my degree, and 9 months that I can devote entirely to my research and to building myself up again.
There are a lot of changes I want to bring about in my life before the year is over, and I've already started working on them. The biggest issue I'm tackling, is basically Marie Kondo-ing my bedroom. We accumulate so much stuff, throughout the year and throughout our lives, and I just don't want to carry it into 2020. I don't want to spend the second half of my 20s feeling weighed down by stuff. Also, I'm about to embark on my Master's thesis: clarity of space means clarity of mind (follow me on Instagram if you'd like to join me). My thesis is another issue. I need to change the way I handle my workload. I'm looking into better planning strategies and actually doing something when I say I will. I also just, I really need a change at work. In the coming weeks I'll be talking to my boss in order to bring about that change.
What are you doing with the last quarter of the year?
